  • Overview: A series bible is your single reference for characters, places, timelines, and rules. Learn what to record, how to organise it, and how to update it as you write....

A series bible is a living reference document for everything that must stay consistent across your books: who your characters are, where they live, how your world works, and what has already happened. Writers who skip it often discover, halfway through book two, that a character's eye colour changed, a town moved counties, or a magic rule was broken three chapters ago. A good bible does not kill creativity. It frees you to invent, because you can check a fact in seconds instead of rereading an entire draft.

Start with the characters. For each significant character, record their full name, age, appearance, speech habits, relationships, occupation, and a short note on what they want and what they fear. Add one line for every major decision they make in each book, so you can see their arc at a glance. You do not need a ten-page dossier for a shopkeeper who appears once, but every recurring character deserves enough detail that you could write them again a year later without guessing.

Next, map the world. Note the geography of each important place, how long it takes to travel between them, what the weather and seasons are like, and what technology or magic exists. If your world has rules, write them down as rules, not as vague impressions. For example, state whether a particular power costs the user something, whether it can be used in public, and who is allowed to use it. When a rule is written plainly, you will notice immediately if a new scene breaks it, and you can either fix the scene or deliberately change the rule with consequences.

Build a timeline that runs across all the books. Record each major event with its date or its place in the sequence, even if your story never gives the reader exact dates. Include births, deaths, marriages, wars, moves, and the events of each book's plot. A timeline catches the quiet errors that readers love to spot, such as a character attending two events in different cities on the same day, or a child who ages three years between books set six months apart. Update it every time you finish a chapter that changes the story's history.

Keep a separate section for language, names, and style choices. If you invented place names, titles, slang, or a system of address, list them with their spellings and meanings. This matters more than it sounds: a fantasy name spelled two ways, or a title used inconsistently, pulls readers out of the story fast. The same section can hold decisions about point of view, tense, chapter length, and recurring motifs, so book two feels like it belongs to the same series even if your writing has improved since book one.

Record what readers already know, and what they do not. A series bible should note which secrets have been revealed, which mysteries are still open, and which clues have been planted but not yet paid off. This prevents two common mistakes: repeating an explanation readers already have, and accidentally resolving a mystery in a throwaway line before its proper moment. When you plan book two, read this section first. It tells you which threads are ready to pull and which need more time.

Choose a format you will actually use. Some writers keep a single document with headings, others use a notebook app with linked pages, and some prefer a spreadsheet with one tab per category. The best format is the one you open without dreading it. Keep it searchable, back it up, and keep a change log at the top noting the date and what you updated. If your bible takes longer to maintain than your draft takes to write, simplify it. A short bible you consult beats a perfect bible you avoid.

Finally, treat the bible as a servant, not a master. If book two needs a better idea that contradicts an early note, you may change the note, but do it deliberately: update the bible, check whether the change affects book one, and note the change so future books follow the new version. Readers forgive a series that evolves. They rarely forgive a series that forgets itself. A well-kept bible is how you show readers that the world they invested in is in careful hands.
