Character names carry more weight than most writers give them credit for. A name signals era, culture, class, personality, and genre before the reader learns anything else about the character. A badly chosen name creates confusion or unintentional comedy; a well chosen one does quiet work on every page.

Start with the world of your story. A character in a contemporary London office should not sound like a character in a medieval fantasy, and a name that belongs to another era will pull readers out of the scene. Check the popularity of a name in the period your story is set: a child named Emma in a novel set in 1970 is plausible, but a child named Nevaeh in the same period is not.

Make your names distinct from one another. Readers confuse characters whose names start with the same letter or sound alike, so avoid a cast full of Sarah, Sam, and Simon. Vary length, rhythm, and initial sounds. If two characters must have similar names for story reasons, give them clearly different nicknames or titles in narration.

Names with obvious meanings can work, but they can also feel heavy-handed. A villain named Malice or a saint named Grace announces itself too loudly. Subtlety is better: a name that hints at a trait without shouting it, or a name whose meaning the reader discovers later, rewards attention without telegraphing the plot.

Test every major name out loud. Say it in dialogue, in narration, and in anger. If it is hard to pronounce, readers will stumble over it on every page. If it is a joke name, ask whether the joke survives a hundred mentions. And check that you have not accidentally named your hero after a famous person, a brand, or a character in a better-known book, unless that is deliberate.

If beta readers keep mixing up two characters, or if you find yourself avoiding a name in dialogue, change it. Search and replace makes renaming painless, and a name that fits will make the whole character easier to write. The right name should feel inevitable once you find it.

Different genres have different naming conventions, and readers bring expectations with them. Fantasy readers expect invented names that sound consistent within the world, and they will forgive a hard-to-pronounce name if it fits the setting. Romance readers expect names that feel contemporary and attractive. Historical fiction readers notice anachronisms instantly, so a name that became popular in 2010 will break a novel set in 1950. Research the naming norms of your genre and your setting before you commit.

Writing characters from cultures other than your own deserves extra care. A name is one of the most personal things a person carries, and getting it wrong, using a name from the wrong language, the wrong era, or the wrong social context, signals to readers from that culture that you did not do your homework. Consult people from the culture, check naming databases, and be honest with yourself about whether you are the right person to write this character. When in doubt, choose a name that is accurate and respectful rather than one that is exotic or convenient for your plot.

A final practical tip: keep a name list for your whole project, with each character's full name, nickname, and one line about who they are. Review the list before you start drafting, and check for repeated initials, similar sounds, and accidental duplicates. This five-minute habit prevents the most common naming problems before they happen, and it gives you a reference to check whenever you introduce someone new. Names are small decisions with large consequences, so make them deliberately and then move on to the story itself.
